Pirates Acting for the Public Good: An Experimental Study
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the structure of online peer-to-peer piracy (illicit file sharing) to show that cooperation for a public good can be established and self-sustained without exogenous intervention and despite costly entry. We use laboratory experiments to study realtime contribution strategies in a continuous public good game with endogenous group formation. We show that even when subjects must pay to access the public good and the breakeven point requires at least half of the participants contribute to it, it is still possible to achieve a cooperative outcome. For this to happen, cooperation must be established early in the game. Once established, cooperation lasts late into each session. Natural language communication is crucial: when subjects communicate via anonymous instant messaging, they achieve equivalent levels of cooperation (with and without costly entry) amounting to contributions of 80% of their total endowment. Despite the rich signaling possibilities offered by variations in real-time contribution rates, cooperation is significantly lower absent the ability to communicate with words. ∗The author thanks Prof. John Morgan and Carlos Cueva for crucial guidance and insightful comments. Traitors Collaborating in Public: Pirates 2.0
This work introduces a new concept of attack against traitor tracing schemes. We call attacks of this type Pirates 2.0 attacks as they result from traitors collaborating together in a public way. In other words, traitors do not secretly collude but display part of their secret keys in a public place; pirate decoders are then built from this public information. The distinguishing property of Pir...

متن کاملFighting Two Pirates
A pirate is a person who buys a legal copy of a copyrighted work and who reproduces it to sell illegal copies. Artists and authors are worried as they do not get the income which is legally theirs. It has been suggested to mark every copy sold with a unique fingerprint, so that any unauthorised copy may be traced back to the source and the pirate who bought it. The fingerprint must be embedded ...

متن کاملThe Interplay between Seeders and Pirates in P2P Networks: An Empirical Analysis
We study the propagation of digital piracy in P2P networks with two population segments: seeders, who are original suppliers of files and pirates, who copy the files. Early on, seeders are the primary supply source for pirates, while later on, pirates can also function as suppliers of the file. The mixture of these two segments enables or impedes the piracy propagation rate over time. In this p...
